Guidelines

The Heritage of London Trust is the only building preservation trust covering all the London Boroughs. Small grants are available from the Trust for the restoration of specific architectural features on historic buildings which are in community or public use of some kind.

Applicants who would like to apply for help from the Trust should initially telephone the Trust to discuss their scheme. If the work proposed is suitable for consideration we will then ask applicants to write to us with details. We will need to know the following:-

  • The name of the project.
  • The total cost of the project including estimates for the project and costs of restoration of any specific architectural details on the building
  • Photographs of the project and a short history of the building.
  • A map and the name of the Borough where the building is located.
  • If appropriate, the annual Report and Accounts of the organisation applying for a grant.
  • We would also like to know if the project is the subject of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid, whether grants have been offered by English Heritage or the local Borough, and how fund-raising is progressing for the scheme proposed.

The Trust Director and Administrator will then visit the project to discuss the work proposed and if the project is suitable, it will then be considered by our Board of Management in January, May or September. Once a grant is offered it remains available for a period of five years and can be a helpful pump-primer for a fundraising programme. Payment is made on receipt of an architect’s certificate showing that the work has been completed.
