1600 km Cycle for the East End - journey completed!

Liz & Robin prepare to start their journey at Land’s End, Saturday, May 24, 2008
On May 24th Liz & Robin headed off on their Great British Adventure – the 1000 mile (1600km) cycle ride from Britain’s south-westerly most point, Land’s End, Cornwall to its furthest north east at John O’Groats in Scotland. HOLT fundraiser Tara Draper-Stumm and her husband Edward were there to wave them off. It didn't seem to matter that they started under grey skies and drizzle – Liz & Robin were just thrilled to have begun this exciting adventure!
Here is one of their blogs from the road:
“Cycling the beautiful Cornish lanes with stunning wild flowers was a delight despite some suitably challenging gradients along the way. Into Devon we diverted to visit National Trust property, Killerton House. The weather improved for us to enjoy an overnight stay in Wells and then a wonderful sunny coffee break by Bath Abbey. We camped near Tetbury - very close to Prince Charles's Highgrove House.

Tara Draper-Stumm catches up with Liz &Robin at their first campsite in Cornwall.
Our journey then took us across the River Severn at Gloucester and on to stay with friends near Ross on Wye, Bromyard and Shrewsbury. Walking the walls of Chester was another highlight. Crossed the Mersey on the busy Runcorn Bridge and then north into Lancashire. This is an epic and challenging journey. Wholly unsupported, we’re carrying all our own kit, including camping gear and there’s no support vehicle offering energy bars from a car window. It’s a huge distance – in another direction, cycling that far would take you to Gibraltar or Tallinn in Estonia! And it’s funded solely by us, so every penny raised really makes a difference for Heritage of London Trust. We are also pleased to raise awareness and funds for a charity which focuses on people by helping to save historic buildings for the enjoyment of local communities.”

Liz & Robin arrive at John O'Groats, June 21st, 2008
Liz & Robin crossed the border into Scotland in early June, a major milestone on their cycling adventure! And finally, on Saturday June 21st, 2008 they completed their epic journey and arrived at John O'Groats! Not content with their stupendous feat, for a bit of fun they then headed off for a "break", cycling a few more hundred miles touring around the Orkney Islands before finally returning to London in July.
Liz & Robin have raised over £11,300 towards our projects in the East End – and it’s not too late to support them! You can make a pledge online at: www.justgiving.com/lizandrobincycleride. Alternatively you can send a cheque, made payable to the “Heritage of London Trust” to our office.
A very big thanks to Liz & Robin and to everyone who sponsored them!
