Events: July-November 2010
All our events (unless otherwise stated) are open to everyone who is interested in London and its unique history and culture. Members of our Society of Friends receive a discounted rate for all events (or go free when there is no charge). Non-members pay slightly extra for events. If you would like to attend any of the events listed below, please contact the office (020 7730 9472) or complete a booking form and return it to the office with a cheque where appropriate. Entrance to events is by ticket only!
Sunday, July 11th at 9:35am: Asics 10k London Run. Come out and run for HOLT or cheer on our runners. Contact the office to book your place. Closing date for entries is July 1st. Saturday, July 24th: "Riches Uncovered" Festival at Excel London. Clare Newton's unique photo displays of London architecture feature in a festival marking 2 years to the Olympics. Wednesday, August 11th at 2:30pm: Tour of Charlton House. Historian Ann Robey will lead us on an interesting tour of Charlton House, "the finest and best preserved Jacobean mansion in the London area". It was built between 1607-12 for Sir Adam Newton, Dean of Durham, tutor to Prince Henry, son of James I. Friends: £ 2.50; Non-members: £5 Monday, September 6th at 7pm: Cries of London Concert. Composer Rupert Bond will conduct a concert based around Cries of London, Purcell and other pieces at St Gabriel's Church, Warwick Square. Tickets: £15; additional donations are welcome! Tuesday, September 7th at 11am : Visit to newly Restored Marianne North Gallery at Kew. After our hard-hat visit to see work in progress at the gallery last year, we now have an opportunity to see the gallery post-restoration! Friends: free; Non-members: £5 Saturday, September 11th: Ride & Stride for London Churches. Take part in the first ride and stride in London. Help raise money for your local church and discover new parts of London. This event is being run by the National Churches Trust. Wednesday, November 10th at 6:30pm: Special Lecture: 'This Unfortunate and Ignored Locality': The Lost Squares of Stepney. Will Palin of Save Britain's Heritage will give us an enthralling talk on lost heritage gems of East London, followed by a glass of wine. The Worshipful Company of Pewterers' have very kindly donated use of their hall, for which we are very grateful. The hall holds many treasures of the Worshipful Company including 17th century panelling, fine China and metalwork. Tickets: £15; additional donations welcome! Tuesday, November 23rd at 10:30am: Tour of Strawberry Hill. The famous home of Horace Walpole has just emerged from a £9 million restoration. Wake up with a cup of coffee in new Strawberry Hill Café before our local guide takes us on tour of the house, with visits to parts not usually open to the general public. Friends: £6; Non-members: £8.
