Resurrection Panel at St Mary-at-Hill

East Cheap, City of London.

This unusual and rare stone relief, which probably dates from the 1670s, depicts the resurrection of the dead at the sounding of trumpets. Although damaged and partly obscured by layers of paint, the relief contains much intriguing detail. It would probably have been installed over the entrance to the burial ground of St Mary-at-Hill in Love Lane. Such panels are rare and are almost unknown in England outside of London. It was brought to our attention by our colleague Roger Bowdler, Head of Designation at English Heritage. The Trust has offered a grant of £4,000 towards the restoration of this interesting artwork.
