The Garden House at Charlton House

Greenwich

Grade I.

Garden HouseThis garden building in the grounds of Charlton House dates from the second half of the 17th century, and had sometimes been attributed to Inigo Jones. It is currently in the ownership of Greenwich Council, and was most recently used as a public lavatory, though it is now vacant. It was placed on English Heritage’s Building at Risk register in 2006. The Heritage of London Trust has agreed a grant of £1,000 towards a feasibility study to determine the best options for its restoration and re-use. Use as an interpretation centre for Charlton House, or conversion to a holiday let under the guardianship of the Landmark Trust have both been suggested. It is hoped that one of our Friends will substantially support the eventual restoration of this project, in view of family connections.
