Tomb of Granville Sharp
All Saints Churchyard, Hammersmith & Fulham.
Granville Sharp was a founding member of the London Committee of the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, which was set up in 1787. Sharp was one of Britain’s first and most dedicated opponents of slavery, and it was he who helped to persuade William Wilberforce to be the spokesman for the Abolition movement in parliament. Sharp’s tomb in the graveyard of All Saints’, Fulham, was restored to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Slave Trade Act in Britain. The Trust offered a grant of £1,500, £500 of which has been donated by Mr Christopher Forbes (of Forbes Magazine). The restoration work was undertaken by Minerva Stone Conservation and work was completed in time for the anniversary of Sharp's death in July 2007. A special remembrance service was held as part of the bicentenary events to mark the abolition of slavery. Professor Simon Schama gave a eulogy at the service. The tomb has recently been listed Grade II by English Heritage.
